LapBand versus Diet and Exercise

Are you severely obese? If so, you may be an ideal candidate for LapBand surgery. A consultation with a qualified surgeon is recommended. Before scheduling that appointment, take the time to compare your options. To get started, compare the LapBand surgery with diet and exercise. Which weight loss approach is best for you?

Unfortunately, the LapBand system is costly. In some instances, select insurance providers will cover all or a portion of the costs. If not, the surgery averages between $15,000 and $20,000 in the United States. Even if you do not have this money, it is still possible to pay for the LapBand surgery. Many patients opt for personal loads, credit card payments, payment plans, or the traditional method of saving first.

As for the cost of exercise, it can be free. Unfortunately, this is something that many do not realize. Yes, you can pay $25 or more a month for a gym membership, but it isnt required. In fact, you dont even need a treadmill. Those who are obese are urged to start with walking. You can do this outside or in a local shopping mall free of charge. After time, you can upgrade to more strenuous exercises. If you dont have the money for a treadmill or gym membership, invest $10 in a set of weights or an exercise video.

Unlike dieting, exercising isnt free, but it can be affordable. Your two most expensive options are organic foods and diet foods. Instead, just watch your eating. By opting for a small cup of grapes, as opposed to two Little Debbie cake snacks, you will lose weight by reducing calorie intake.

In terms of results, LapBand produces the quickest results. After undergoing surgery, weight loss will happen over time. With that said, patients tend to experience a significant weight loss in the first month. This is due to the all-liquid diet. Weight gain is common when solid foods are reintroduced, but long-term weight loss is still possible with healthy food choices.

Diet and exercise work, but the weight loss will take longer. The initial weight loss with diet and exercise is water. If you have never exercised before, you will start to notice a change in as little as week. You may be surprised what a daily walk can do for your health and weight. By cutting foods that are high in fats and calories, weight loss will occur. Remember, you will lose weight, but the process will take longer, when compared to the LapBand.

The LapBand has increased in popularity in the United States. It was first approved for use in 2001. Due to its success rate and low risk of complications, it is one of the fastest growing procedures. Although there is a lower risk of complications, when compared to other weight loss surgeries, there is always risk involved. These risks can include complications, such as band slippage, stomach erosion, regurgitation, and death. In most cases, if you are at a high risk for complication, medical professionals advise against the LapBand.

In terms of safety and complications, diet and exercise are more natural weight loss methods. As for diet, as long as you consume healthy foods that you are not allergic to, no complications or side effects will be experienced. In term of exercise, those suffering from severe forms of obesity should develop an exercise plan with a medical professional, such as a primary care physician or trainer. This should reduce the risk of exercise related injuries.

The LapBand system isnt right for everyone. Most doctors have strict criteria that must be met before surgery is decided on. For example, most surgeons operate on those between the ages of 18 and 60, those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) rating of 40 or more, and those with a clear understanding of the necessary diet restrictions. For that reasons, not everyone is an ideal candidate. This means that just because you want to undergo the LapBand surgery, it does not mean that you can.

When does losing should start

People who have finally decided to lose weight should know where to begin. First, he or she must determine the real reason or reasons why they would want to lose weight. By determining and establishing the reason/s why one would want to lose weight, this can help him or her because they can these as motivations during the weight loss phases they are about to face.

Next, they must know it within themselves if they can truly and whole-heartedly commit in doing the things necessary for them to lose weight. Third, they must look for a back up support system in case they can no longer manage weight control on their own. And last but not the least, they must make sure that they are strong enough to deal with possibility of failing if they do not achieve their desired weight or result.

This is a must that one chooses a responsible and safe weight loss program or plan carefully. One must also make sure that he or she is willing to undergo for a trial period before investing time, money, and effort in enrolling to a specific weight loss class.

Tips in losing weight

Experts say that two of the most crucial factors that affect weight loss are foodor calorieintake and the frequency of physical activities such as exercise. Although it may seem easy to monitor calorie intake and exercise regularly, it is not always effective especially if the person doing it is not determined and disciplined enough. For a person to achieve their weight loss goals here are some tips that they can use:

1. Dont ever skip regular meals. You must not forget that food nourishes the body. Although dieting or cutting down on food intake can help one lose weight, this cannot assure permanent weight loss because they will tend to eat more the next meal and the meals after that.

2. Regulate the food intake. Eating in smaller amounts or food portions will help one cut down on calorie and fat intake.

3. Monitor gradual weight loss of about 1 to 2 pounds weekly without irritability, fatigue, or weakness. This will allow your body to regain the loss water and fats.

4. Selecting healthy food choices. Choosing the foods that a person can eat from the food pyramid would help him or her develop a well-balanced diet as well as good eating habits.

5. Cut down on calories properly. If one is losing weight to achieve health and fitness, he or she must make sure that they know their bodys required calorie-intake because cutting too many calories can slow down metabolism. This will also make it difficult for the body to consume the necessary nutrients it needs to perform well.

People Stuggle to Eat Healthy

People Stuggle to Eat Healthy
Brian Clancey

Most people struggle to eat healthy foods throughout the day and
at each meal, according to results of an Ipsos-Reid poll for
Canada’s President’s Choice label.

The poll found 94% say they just can’t live without a favorite
food, while 7% concede they almost never make healthy food
choices.

“Canadians want food choices that help make it easier to eat
better and live healthier without giving up the foods and
flavors they love,” says Paul Uys, Vice President, Loblaw Brands
Limited. Most surveyed do understand the importance of reducing
the salt content of their diets and increasing fiber, Uys
noted.

These results “suggest they’re not eating as well as they could
because of their must-have meals,” say officials at Presidents
Choice. “In fact, 59% say they’d like to eat healthier but don’t
want to give up their favorite foods, with 40% citing comfort
foods like macaroni and cheese or pizza as real weaknesses.”

Finding Time a Priority — Doing It Hard

Despite these findings, the survey found people know it’s
important to eat well. Roughly 82% say finding the time to
prepare and eat healthy meals is a priority, yet half still find
it difficult to make healthy food choices.

“There are a number of other perceived barriers to healthy
habits other than favorite foods that may explain why eating
well can be a challenge,” Presidents Choice said in discussing
the survey results. “Time of day certainly seems to be a factor,
with more than 80% of Canadians finding it hard to eat properly
at some point.”

A quarter find it hard to eat healthy snacks during the day,
with 30% of woman falling prey to temptation, compared to 17% of
the men surveyed. Men, by contrast, struggle with breakfast,
with 24% saying they do not start their day with a healthy
breakfast, compared to 17% of women. This works out to 21%
finding it hard to eat a healthy breakfast. Fewer people have a
problem eating healthy meals the rest of the day. Even so,
eating a healthy lunch is a problem for 16% of people surveyed
and 15% find supper a struggle.

Cost, taste, and choice

The perceived cost, taste and overwhelming number of choices
when it comes to healthier food products also seem to be
barriers for many. In fact, 60% feel that the costs of eating
healthfully have increased, while 54% say their family would eat
more healthfully if the nutritious options tasted better.
Furthermore, 59% indicate they can be confused by the many
different things they’re supposed to look out for when shopping
for healthy foods.

“Canadians do recognize that specific foods are important in
achieving a well-balanced diet,” says Uys. “Interestingly
enough, the Healthy Eating survey found that 68% think it’s
important to incorporate sodium-reduced foods into their diet,
and 58% of younger Canadians aged 18-34 agree with this
statement. This is an age group that typically loves their salty
foods, so the fact that they’re aware that it’s important to
choose foods that offer responsible sodium levels is
encouraging.”

About 40% of those surveyed would like to incorporate more fibre
into their diet, but find it difficult. “There are so many great
and easy ways to add fibre to your diet – yogurt with a
high-fibre muffin and a handful of almonds is a perfect
breakfast to take on the go,” says Uys.

The Joy of Soy

The Healthy Eating survey found that just 29% of Canadians
incorporate soy protein into their diet on a regular basis.
While overall, soy is just one component of healthy eating
towards lowering cholesterol and cardiovascular disease risk,
evidence continues to be strong on the benefit of soy protein
compared to animal protein sources.

Not only is soy a great source of vegetable protein and so low
in saturated fat – but many soy foods can be a source of omega-3
polyunsaturated fatty acids and a good source of calcium.
Despite this, 27% of Canadians feel they get enough protein from
other sources; 25% aren’t familiar with soy protein; 20% say
they’re not interested; 18% don’t like the taste; 13% don’t know
how to incorporate it into their daily diet; and five% don’t
know how much they should eat.

Nutritionists recommend consuming 25 grams of soy protein each
day – about eight grams per meal. “When you consider that just
one glass of PC Soy Beverage contains about a third of your
daily requirement, it’s easy to swallow,” says Uys.
